2700 years of history

Wine has been made in the DO Utiel Requena for 2700 years. Archaeological sites found in the region show that there has been continuous production and trading of wine from the Iberian era to the present day.

Dozens of wineries carved in stone, such as Las Pilillas de Requena, amphoras, documents and grape seeds have been found and studied tracing the wine culture of Utiel Requena back to when wine was discovered in the Iberian Peninsula.

The antiquity, the continuity together with the uniqueness of the indigenous grape variety Bobal have resulted in this cultural landscape being named ‘Territorio Bobal’ and it is on the official list being considered to become a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE site.
